Language Arts and Literature
Students build on fluency, comprehension and vocabulary by reading selections from genres such as fiction, non-fiction, realistic fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, mythology and poetry. Students develop writing, speaking, listening and communication skills along with the encouragement of trust and mutual respect. 

 
Math
In the lower grades, students develop math skills through hands-on experiences, discussions and exploration reinforced through carefully considered practice. They are later exposed to topics ranging from numeration to equations and graphs. At the middle school level, students can advance in math with courses including Algebra, Geometry and Algebra 1 & 2. 

 
Music and Drama
We promote the fine arts at Van Avery Prep at every grade level. Students develop the foundation of rhythmic understanding in their music classes and participate in dramatic musical performances each year. 

 
Physical Education and Athletics
Using the State and National Standards as guidelines, the goals of the Physical Education program are motor learning, biomechanics, exercise physiology and personal development. At the middle school level, Van Avery Prep athletic teams compete in the Inland Valley Interscholastic Athletic Association. We pride ourselves on our coaching staff and our “no-cut” policy encouraging athletes of all experience levels to participate and learn the fundamentals of the sport.

 
Science
Students are motivated to engage in science when they seek answers to their own questions. They explore science through hands-on experiments, and use scientific ideas and processes to solve everyday problems. Students will make careful observations and strive to make sense of those observations by constructing explanations that are consistent with currently accepted scientific principles. 

 
Social Studies
Van Avery Prep uses social studies curriculum that includes textbooks for classroom use and online textbooks for home or anywhere the Worldwide Web is accessible. Teaching strategies include interactive lectures, experiential exercises, social studies skill builders, response groups, writing for understanding and problem solving group work. 

 
Spanish
All students, Kindergarten through 8th grade will learn Spanish as a second language. They study Spanish culture and history and are exposed to a variety of activities including poems, songs, writings and art.

 
Visual Arts Program
The Van Avery Prep Visual Arts Program for grades K through 8th consists of five components; Perception, creative expression, historical and cultural context, aesthetic valuing and artistic connections, relationships and applications.

With a strong foundation in the core subjects, we also teach a second language at all grade levels.  We offer an extensive athletic program, expose every student to the fine arts and encourage social interaction through a wide variety of clubs.

Flag Raising Ceremony – Van Avery Prep Scouts raise the flag at this annual event kicking off the start of the new school year.

October

Ropes Course – 8^th grade participates in this character building exercise.

Middle School Dance – Grades 6^th through 8^th participate in this evening event.

Red Ribbon Week – A week dedicated to promoting drug awareness.

Pumpkin Contest – Families decorate their pumpkins for entrance into our annual contest.  Followed by classroom Halloween parties.

November

Harvest Festival – A day of fun and games in a festive atmosphere celebrating the upcoming Thanksgiving Holiday.

December

Holiday Programs – Each grade puts on an evening musical performance for their families to watch and enjoy.

February

Student Recognition Awards – Each year students are recognized for outstanding performance in a particular subject or category and are presented with an award in front of their parents and piers.

Honor Society Installations – Middle school students with a qualifying GPA and Community Service hours are recognized and inducted into this elite group who further serve their school and community.

March

Dr. Seuss’ Birthday – Students come to school dressed as their favorite Dr. Seuss character.

St. Patrick’s Day – Kindergarten through 3^rd grade students are on the lookout for those mischievous Leprechauns who seem to reek havoc on their classrooms each year!

April

Science Expo – Science Fair for Grades K – 8^th.  Students demonstrate science concepts learned in class.

May

8^th Grade Camp Ozark – As a graduation trip, interested 8^th grade students spend 5 days at Camp Ozark, Mt. Ida, Arkansas where they are exposed to a variety of activities and are learning valuable lessons about life and about themselves.

Annual Art Show – Students K-8^th grade submit their original works in various mediums for judging by local artisans.

June

Middle School Daytime Recognition Awards and Sports Banquet - Students are again recognized for outstanding performance in a particular subject and/or sport and are presented with an award.  Parents are invited to attend.

Graduation Ceremony - 8th grade students participate in a graduation ceremony.

Graduation Gala – Middle school students attend this evening dance celebrating the graduation of their peers.

We pride ourselves on our “no-cut” policy, encouraging athletes of all experience levels to participate.  Every athlete who tries out for a sport is guaranteed a position on a team whether at the Varsity or Junior Varsity level. 

Our coaches are awesome and are the key to our success in the league. While advocates for academics as a priority over athletics, they teach our athletes the fundamentals of the sport, encouraging skill development, insisting on sportsmanship and instilling a passion for

the game.
